Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the option to question particular calls made by the official, echoing the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
